Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month. This year’s theme is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society.

WCHF Women

The women Inductees into the Hall of Fame have significantly contributed to the continuing knowledge and practice of the conservation ethic by engaging in education, scientific, literary, historical and charitable pursuits which will recognize the principles of the conservation movement.

According to Data USA, 78.5% of conservation scientists and foresters in the US are male. As recently as the 1940s, there were almost no women working professionally in Wisconsin conservation. (Schlitz Audubon Nature Center)

WCHF Announces 2021 Inductee – Gary Eldred

It’s official! The Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame Foundation, Inc. (WCHF) has announced the selection of  the conservation leader for induction in 2021. The inductee will be Gary Eldred — citizen scientist extraordinaire.

“I had been a hunter, fisherman, and trapper since I was twelve. I deeply enjoyed these outdoor activities and spent as much time as I could pursuing them. In the process, I became a skilled amateur naturalist and developed a strong interest in conservation. While in my mid-twenties, I was fortunate enough to read Aldo Leopold’s Sand County Almanac. That new perspective on nature and conservation, especially the chapters on land ethics, began a subtle transformation of my thinking.” – Gary Eldred

Our Newest Member: Wisconsin Waterfowl Association

The Wisconsin Waterfowl Association (WWA) will be the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame’s 35th organizational member.

The 7500-member WWA was established in 1984 to support waterfowl hunters in all aspects of this trajectory. Through its statewide network of volunteer chapters and with its small staff and volunteer board, it fulfills three missions:
(1) Restoring hydrology to disrupted or impaired wetlands wetlands;
(2) Advocating in legislative and policy issues important to waterfowling; and
(3) Educating both novice and experienced waterfowlers on all things waterfowl.

In its 36-year history, the WWA has restored over 15,000 acres of wetlands, educated tens of thousands of waterfowlers, and enjoyed a track record of successful representation on issues important to the state’s 60,000 waterfowlers.
